On this edition of The Sunday Spin:
Rick Pearson talks with NPR Illinois Springfield correspondent, Brian Mackey, to get his take on the closing of the Spring Legislative Session and state budget deal that was reached. Brian shares his reasons as to why it was so easy to reach a deal, including the increase of funds due to taxes and the lasting impact of how the impasse ended last summer.
Next, Rick is joined by Democratic Rep. Rob Martwick to get a better understanding of the controversy surrounding the Democratic support for a graduated income tax to replace the state’s flat income tax rate. Rob also touches on property tax relief, the state’s efforts to cut spending, and more.
Then, Rick speaks with Illinois House Republican leader Jim Durkin about the determination to negotiate and compromise to settle on a budget, especially since this is the first time Republicans have voted on a budget in awhile. Jim also comments on the possible effects the budget and push for a graduated income tax may have on political campaigns.
