There’s a buzz in the air. It’s National Pollinator Week

The Business of Food with Steve Alexander

One in every three bites of our food is dependent on pollinators

Monarch butterflies, prolific pollinators, resting in the Witness Tree near the South Patrol Road Prairie Restoration Area at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. The monarchs roost at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie to catch a rest as they migrate to Mexico in early weeks of autumn. Midewin Volunteer Ron Kapala took these photos. The “Witness Tree” was utilized as a reference point for land surveys in the early 1800s.

From bees to butterflies, billions of pollinators are hard at work making much of our food possible. Steve Alexander spoke with Veronica Hinke, public affairs officer for the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie south of Joliet, about efforts being made to protect pollinators, as well as the prairie.
