Dave Hoekstra visits with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer Sam Lay, director John Anderson, and Nancy Watrous of the Chicago Film Archives to discuss the documentary Sam Lay in Bluesland, screening at the On a Blues Note Benefit Show on December 7 at Savage Smyth, 920 N. Franklin.
The film is centered around rare club footage shot by Lay on 8mm film of Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Otis Rush and more. They talk about the historical significance of Lay’s home movies, Lay’s work with the likes of Wolf and Dylan (and providing the whistle on Highway 61 Revisited), and more.
