This week’s Nocturnal Journal kicks off with three of Chicago’s August Wilson Monologue Competition winners. Casey Edwards, Lawren Carter and Booker Vance share their respective introductions to the late playwright and read a few pieces live.
Veteran drummer Angelo Varias is in-studio to talk about his time with John Prine’s band and a new Prine release exclusively for Record Store Day, “September ’78”, in which he appears. He also discusses being on the sessions for Steve Goodman’s “Go Cubs Go”.
We go Off the Eaten Path with Eater Chicago’s Daniel Gerzina, who discusses the late chef Homaro Cantu and gives us a snapshot of the city’s best burger joints.
Finally, we get a preview of the Chicago Improv Festival with executive director Jonathan Pitts and a panel of international comedians: Russian comic Kristina Guzikova, Steven Lyons (New Zealand’s Improv Bandits), and Victor Soares (Improv Brasil), as well as Second City’s Mary Mahoney.
