A deadly fungus spreading in more than half of U.S. states is so concerning in part because of the way it has evolved to be resistant to both antimicrobial cleaning products and anti-fungal drugs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently warned.

A potentially deadly fungus that’s resistant to treatment has been confirmed in at least 28 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned, but identifying the dangerous pathogen is actually quite difficult.

The fungus has already been detected in more than half of U.S. states and is spreading at an “alarming” rate, the CDC says.

This fungus likely originated in a health care setting, explained Melissa Nolan, an assistant professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of South Carolina.

Candida auris, or C. auris, is so concerning because it is often resistant to anti-fungal drugs, making it hard to treat infections. It can also be hard to identify with standard lab tests, making it even more difficult to treat properly and early.

Health officials said that its resistance to antifungal medication is “particularly concerning” because those medications are often the first option for treatment.
