UPDATE: McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Dwight Maness, heard in this report, died Monday, September 14, 2015.

On Memorial Day, the country solemnly remembered those who made the ultimate sacrifice. In this report, WGN Radio’s Vic Vaughn visits with war veterans who are still among us, serving our communities — and theirs — in a different uniform, but all too often with the same sacrifice. Vic talks with Chicago Police officer Pedro “Pete” Medina, a US Army veteran severely injured during combat operations in Afghanistan when his helicopter came under mortar attack upon landing. Vic also talks with US Army combat veteran and McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Dwight Maness, shot last year in the line of duty.
