After an unusually snow-free early winter, the final weeks of winter 2012-2013 have seen a series of snowfalls in the Chicago area that have been enough to close schools, cancel events, and disrupt travel. Even as we are now in meteorological spring, the snow continues.

The Chicago area is bracing for what looks to be the most widespread snowstorm of the season.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the entire Chicago area. The National Weather Service upgraded the regions south and the southwest suburbs to a warning at 10:30 a.m. Monday. This warning runs from 3 a.m. Tuesday until midnight.

EFFECT.

* TIMING...LIGHT SNOW IS IS EXPECTED TO SPREAD ACROSS NORTHEAST
  ILLINOIS TONIGHT AND BECOME MORE INTENSE TOWARD DAYBREAK TUESDAY
  AND PERSIST THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING.

* SNOW ACCUMULATION...6 TO 9 INCHES WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS
  POSSIBLE.

* OTHER IMPACTS...SNOW WILL LIKELY FALL HEAVILY AT TIMES FROM LATE
  TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH EARLY TUESDAY EVENING. ACCUMULATION
  RATES OF 1 TO 1.5 INCHES PER HOUR ARE POSSIBLE AT TIMES MAKING
  SNOW REMOVAL DIFFICULT AND TRAVEL EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. THIS WILL
  IMPACT BOTH RUSH HOURS ON TUESDAY...WITH THE HIGHER POTENTIAL
  FOR HEAVY SNOWFALL DURING THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING
  RUSH HOUR.
