Lemmenjoki, Finland

Lemmenjoki, Finland, is a prime listening point for some of our most distant DX listeners. Here are a couple of reports from there:

Bo-Kristian Lindqvist reports he was able to tune into Radio 720 from a listening post in Lemmenjoki (Love River), in the Lappland region. He sent a tape so we could hear what the station sounds like to someone over 4000 miles away. Click to listen (RealAudio). You may need to play it a few times, but you should be able to hear Dean identifying "Chicago's News and Talk, Radio 720, WGN."

Bo-Kristian reports the temperature was -58 degrees Farenheit when this picture was taken. This was some of the coldest weather ever recorded in Finland. Later in the week, temperatures rose to a more comfortable -31 degrees.
Inside the "listening post." The receiving equipment is connected to an antenna stretching over half a mile. From this location and others, he's picked up 700 stations from 145 countries around the world.

It isn't every day that reindeer are visible to someone listening to WGN.

Meanwhile, Mika Makelainen also reports hearing WGN while on listening expeditions in Lemmenjoki. Not only has he picked up WGN since the 1980's, he's also put together a very interesting website about the hobby of DXing, full of pictures, audio, and logs of the many stations around the world he's picked up from his listening post. Check it out.

Thanks to Bo-Kristian and Mika, for checking in and sharing their hobby.
