WGN
Radio Sports Department Wins Three 2002 A.I.R. Awards
(Chicago, November
7, 2002) The WGN Radio Sports Department won three 2002 Achievement
In Radio Awards at the seventh annual luncheon held today.
Sports
Central host David Kaplan won the Best Sportscast award for
an edition of Theme Sports. The rules of Theme Sports call for the
host of the afternoon program to present Kap with a theme for the
day. He then has several hours to construct a report of the day's
sports news that incorporates as many terms as possible that are
related to the theme. The results of this occasional series usually
include several dozen terms weaved seamlessly into the sportscast,
often in hilarious ways.
Although it
was not a winning year on the field, Pat Hughes and Ron Santo were
winners in the Best Sports Play-By-Play category for their performance
in Cubs Baseball booth. Known affectionately
as "The Pat and Ron Show," the duo have developed a highly
entertaining style that makes every broadcast enjoyable, even if
the game is not going the Cubs' way. Pat's vivid descriptions of
the action and encyclopedic knowledge of the sport's history blend
perfectly with Ron's background as a true living legend who shares
with listeners the emotional peaks and valleys of every die hard
Cub fan.
The third award
goes, appropriately, to The Three
Bears for Best Sports Talk Show. Three hours before every Chicago
Bears game, Dan Hampton, Tom Waddle and Glen Kozlowski are joined
by Dave Eanet to provide a thorough preview of the upcoming battle.
Then, after the game, they're back, along with David Kaplan and
Andy Masur's reports from the stadium, to analyze every aspect of
the contest. Hampo, Waddle and Koz understand the game the way only
former players can and don't hold back with their praise or criticism.
WGN was represented
by finalists in several additional categories. The
A.I.R. Awards competition benefits the March of Dimes and is endorsed
by numerous professional broadcasting associations.
