Your
Christmas Songs!
Here's
that list of songs we were mentioning on Tuesday's (12/12) show.
These are some fun or favorite Christmas songs that AREN'T Nat
King Cole. We LOVE Nat! Don't get me wrong, but you gotta love
Ben Folds and...Outkast! This list starts with my song Griffin's
"Christmas Mix." We've added our listeners' suggestions,
too. Buyer beware, now, but here are some suggestions to round
out your holidays!
Christmas
Mix-
Christmas
Time-Bill Cosby: Bill tells of Christmas as a kid in the Cosby
household. Brief, fun way to start off the mix, eh?
Jingle
Bells-Barenaked Ladies: After a long, solemn intro, goofiness
ensues.
Everything's
Gonna Be Cool This Christmas-Eels: This song can basically be
wrapped up in one line from it, "Baby Jesus, born to rock!"
Christmas
Is Coming-Vince Guaraldi Trio: Yeah.
Come
On! Let's Boogey to the Elf Dance!-Sufjan Stevens: Sufjan's Christmas
album has 42 tracks, and in all honesty, about half of them are
needless. But that still leaves about twenty grade A Christmas
tracks, most of which are the originals.
Sleigh
Ride-Ella Fitzgerald: Watch "Elf" and I guarantee you'll
fall in love with this version of the tired Christmas classic.
My
Favorite Things-Outkast: Walks the fine line of overly busy and
overly awesome, and ultimately ends with one foot in both camps,
but I still love this song.
Only
At Christmas Time- Sufjan Stevens: No way could I pick just one
from Sufjan.
Christmas
In Hollis- Run-DMC: They were able to say, "I'd never steal
from Santa, 'cause that ain't right!" and maintain a remarkable
amount of street cred. This song must own.
Lonely
Christmas Eve-Ben Folds: Ben writes from the POV of the Grinch
in this rawkin' Christmas original.
Snow
Day-Matt Pond PA: Not really Christmas-y, but a very fun winter
song.
Hey
Guys! It's Christmas Time!-Sufjan Stevens: Yeah. I couldn't help
myself.
Blue
Xmas-Miles Davis & Bob Dorough: Much more cynical than "Lonely
Christmas Eve." Bob points out all that is wrong with Christmas
over Miles' smooth sax.
Christmas
Song-Dave Matthews Band: B-E-A-utiful acoustic track from Jesus'
right hand man. Oh, you didn't know. Yeah, it's true. Dave and
Jesus are tight. You think he could've written "#41"
without a little help?
It's
Christmas! Let's Be Glad!-Sufjan Stevens: Simple, happy sentiment
that I'd like to leave you with via Sufjan's silly, raucous mini-song.
Here are ones emailed in by you listeners:
-Our multigenerational family have been singing, Dominick the
Donkey, sung by Lou Monte, for many many years. When a new member
marries into the family, he or she, has to learn it and perform
it on Christmas Day!! Also, when the kids are old enough to talk/sing
- they also get to sing!! They enjoy the chorus the best! We have
so much fun and it's a great family tradition!
-Savatage "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)".
- A
Great Hannukah CD is by Jon Simon and is titled "Hanukkah
and all that Jazz". It is instrumental, very relaxing and
of course, kind of jazzy (www.jonsimonmusic.com). I also like
the Adam Sandler songs. Hamakor Judaica in Skokie and Rosenblums'
(on Devon) also have big collections. On the X-mas side, I do
like "Feliz Navidad" by Jose Feliciano, Merry X-Mas
(War is Over) by John Lennon, "Do They Know it's Christmas?",
"Little Drummer Boy" (classic version), "The Pretty
Little Dolly", "The 12 Pains of Christmas" by Bob
Rivers and of course "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch"
from the cartoon.
-Ricky
Skaggs' Christmas Time's a Comin'
- My favorite Christmas songs are; The Twelve Pains of Christmas
(not sure who sings it, but it's so funny and so true!) and Let
It Snow by Ricochet (country group). Love your show!
- The Christmas song that I remember from my childhood was Glowworm
(the Christmas version) by Mel Torme. My parents played it all
the time, at Christmas, as we were growing up.
- One of my favorite "funny" Christmas songs was played
by Uncle Bobby every Christmas a long time ago. It was "Porky
Pigs" version of a I'll Have a Blue Christmas. I still laugh
today when I think of it and remember him very fondly.
-My
two favorite Christmas songs are: Three Ships performed by Sting
and God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman performed by Bare Naked Ladies.
- Barenaked Ladies: Elf's Lament, off Barenaked for the Holidays.
AWESOME!!!
- I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas (not sure who sings it)
-Walking
Around in Womans Underwear (sung to Walking In A Winter Wonderland)
-Ones
that are seldom heard.
Still Still Still..Mormon Tabernacle Choir
Infant Lowely, Infant Holy " "
Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanual " "
The choir also does an awesome version of the 12 Days of Christmas
were each "day" is sung in a different musical style,
the last being John Phillip Sousa
