Q&A
Q: How often should
I feed crickets to my 6- to 8-month-old Mali uromastyx lizard? -- J.T.,
Tucson, Ariz.
A: "Not at all,
if you don’t want," says research biologist Randall Grey, the world’s
authority on these lizards, also called spiny-tailed lizards. But have
a heart. Just as dogs like an occasional biscuit, these guys like to chomp
on an occasional hopper. A cricket snack once every week or two is just
fine. Uromastyx lizards are primarily herbivorous. In captivity, Grey
recommends 60 percent of the diet be mixed vegetables, such as peas, carrots,
green beans and yams, 25 percent dark greens such as mustard or collared
greens or turnip, and the remaining food mostly a mix of wild bird seeds,
beans and other vegetables taken from packaged soup mixes, sesame seeds
and commercial baby iguana formula (for young spiny-tails).
