Q: How can I determine what sex my tegu lizard is? The vet wants $30 for the job. Can do it myself? -- S.S., Sanford, Fla.

A: Do-it-yourself sexing isn't as simple as it sounds. After more than 30 years of sexing lizards, Dr. Fredric L. Frye, a Davis, Calif. vet with a special interest in cold-blooded critters, says he still can't look at a tegu lizard and tell if it's a "boy" or a "girl" because there are no external anatomical differences.

If you happen to have a disposable polypropylene catheter or an instrument called a sexing probe, you might determine the sex of your lizard. However, don't try this trick at home; you may injure the lizard. By the way, Frye says that $30 is a bargain basement price for the job.
