Q&A

Q: We found a Jack Russell terrier abandoned on the road, and he's been a great pet. There's only one problem: He won’t use the back yard to do his "business." He’ll only go if we drive him at 6 a.m. to a field. Any suggestions? — L.H., Royal Oak, Mich.

A: Congratulations to your dog! This was a difficult trick to teach a human.

Prolific author and trainer Brian Kilcommons, of New York City, suggests housebreaking your dog all over again, as if it were a puppy. "We all have to do the same thing in the morning, eventually. Let your dog run up and down stairs for a while before going out, or even play a game of chase outside. Did you ever try doing that with your legs crossed? He'll have to go." As he succeeds, joyously say, "Hurry up!" and instantly pop the dog a special treat.

Don't just let your dog wander aimlessly around the yard; take him on a leash, and repeatedly to the same place. If he urinates but refuses to have a bowel movement, ask your vet about baby glycerin suppositories, which can be purchased over the counter at drug stores.
