Q&A
Q: I recently adopted
a stray dog from the pound. Mary is sweet and wonderful but the people
at the shelter told me she has Elmore’s Disease. They told me not to worry,
however, since Elmore’s Disease isn’t deadly. But I remain concerned.
Should I be? – J.R., Plantation, Fla.
A: The situation
definitely sounds worse than it is because Elmore’s Disease doesn’t exist.
We double and triple checked with seasoned diagnosticians who have seen
just about everything there is: Dr. Shelly Rubin in Chicago, Ill. and
Dr. Jeff Werber in Los Angeles, Calif. None of the vets we spoke to had
ever heard of Elmore’s Disease. Could it be that the shelter person meant
Addison’s Disease (treatment is required for underactive adrenal glands)
or Cushing’s Disease (treatment is essential to control an overproduction
of steroid hormones by the adrenal glands)?. See your vet promptly to
determine, what, if anything, is wrong with Mary. In fact, we advise people
to see a vet anytime they adopt a companion animal.
