Q&A

Q: I'm interested in learning more about canine Frisbee. Where can I participate in my area? Are there any books or videos than can help us? -- C.K., Atlanta, Ga.

A: Aside from the benefits of physical exercise, lots of dogs consider canine Frisbee their "job." It's sure a whole lot better to have a border collie focus its attentions on catching a disc than eating the couch. Although lots of border collies partake, the sport is open to any breed and mixed-breed dogs.

To find a Frisbee club in your area, and for a free training manual, call 1-800-423-3268. An excellent training book is "Frisbee Dogs: How To Raise, Train and Compete" by Peter Bloeme (PRB Associates, Atlanta, Ga., 1995; $14.95) or order one of two training videos, selling for $19.95 to $24.95, from Skyhoundz, 1-800-786-9240. For a history of the sport, check out "Ashley Whippet Official Biography" by Irv Lander (Pawsitive Publishing, Encino, Calif., 1996; $5). Ashley was the high flyin' dog that made the sport famous. By the way, we're told it's an "authorized" biography, so you won't read about how Ashley sniffed around with other dogs or went to rehab programs to cure compulsive tail wagging.
