Pet Central
Q&A

Q: I've been feeding my year-old basenji a steady diet of chicken, rice and vegetables. There's absolutely no question in my mind that it's healthier than commercial food with preservatives. I prepare the food twice weekly and warm up meals in the microwave. Is the microwaving dangerous to the dog? -- S.R., Delray Beach, Fla.

A: You're not alone. Increasing numbers of people are cooking for their pets. However, we always suggest that when people prepare pet menus, they do so with guidance from their vets to insure the diets are balanced and appropriate. For example, never place your cat on a strict vegetarian diet or a dog on an all beef diet.

Veterinary nutritionists tell us that as far as they know, it's no more or less dangerous to microwave your pet's food than to zap your own.
