Q&A
Q: My 15-year-old
cat is having very loose stool. Is this because his teeth hurt due to
his age? Should I use a food for senior cats? -- G.W., Las Vegas, Nev.
A: Loose stool
is a symptom of something. See your vet to determine what that is.
Dr. Dan Carey,
director of technical communications at IAMS pet food company, Dayton,
Ohio, says you could be correct about your elderly kitty having dental
problems. But that doesn't necessarily account for the loose stool, unless
the cat has a problem digesting the food. In cats, a persistent loose
stool can be a cause for concern, an indication of anything from internal
parasites to liver disease, gastrointestinal problems, or the cat eating
string or something else it shouldn't have. Carey warns, "Anytime any
cat, especially an older cat, has loose stool for 48 hours, see your vet."
All that being
said, at 15, your cat is certainly a candidate for senior food.
