VIETNAM AND THE PENTAGON PAPERS
When he leaked the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times in
1971, DANIEL ELLSBERG instantly became one of the most recognizable
names of the Vietnam era. What you may not know is that he also
played an instrumental part in the American buildup in Vietnam,
as both a government consultant and a high ranking official in
the McNamara defense department. He has finally written a book
on his experiences
Secrets:
A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers, and joins
us to tell the story beginning at 9:00pm tonight.
MONDAY NOVEMBER 4TH

expected. Nevertheless, these elections are crucial, as the new

Illinois politics, too, face the possibility of great upheaval.

elections with meticulous care, join us: in studio, PAUL GREEN

THE CHURCHES AND THE HOLOCAUST
When his previous book
Hitler's
Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust
was released in 1995, DANIEL JONAH GOLDHAGEN instantly became
one of the most controversial writers in the world. An object
of much scorn from some academic circles, he nevertheless generated
an enormously large readership and a far broader general interest
in Holocaust research. Tonight, Goldhagen visits Extension 720
again. His latest book is
A
Moral Reckoning: The Role of the Catholic Church in the Holocaust
and Its Unfulfilled Duty of Repair. Others will join him
for a broad discussion, beginning at 9:00pm.

FRIDAY
NOVEMBER 8TH
THE FIRST WORLD WAR
So much attention has been directed toward the Second World
War in this country that the First is often overlooked, both in
its conduct and consequences. Yet the Great War may be the most
important event of the twentieth century, and may go down as the
most influential and tragic event in all history. For its consequences
continue to this day: mass death, industrial war, the dehumanization
of mankind, the rise of radical political movements, and on and
on. All culture and politics changed forever after 1914 and, sadly,
nearly all the conflict in the world since (including our present
troubles) can in some way be traced back to the period 1914-1918.
Tune in tonight for a full review of that tragic conflict, with
MARGARET MacMILLAN, author of the new book
Paris
1919: Six Months That Changed the World, and others.
MONDAY
NOVEMBER 11TH
VETERANS DAY WITH MICHAEL BESCHLOSS
One of America's finest presidential historians is out with
yet another book and he returns to this program on Veterans Day

and their respective roles in Europe during and after the war.
The book is
The
Conquerors: Roosevelt, Truman and the Destruction of Hitler's
Germany, 1941-1945 and Beschloss joins us for the full
two hours beginning at 9:00pm.
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 12TH
THE LAW AND LITERATURE

Though
the present-day spate of law novels may often seem to be overkill,
the law has played a crucial and prominent role throughout the
history of literature. Tonight, two of the most prominent law
novelists of modern times, SCOTT TUROW and JAMES ZAGEL, join us
to discuss their latest works (
Reversible
Errors and
Money
to Burn, respectively) but we'll be joined by an expert
on law in literature to talk broadly about the history of law
in literature, and how its depiction has changed over the different
eras.

INVENTING AMERICA
The history of the United States has been as much about technology

ALEXANDER KEYSSAR of Harvard University, will join us along with
others, as we examine our history through the window of innovation.
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 15TH
THE HOLOCAUST: A REINTERPRETATION
So
much has been written about the destruction of the European Jews
that another general history of the Holocaust may seem unnecessary.
But DEBÓRAH DWORK and the important Holocaust research center
she heads at Clark University continue to produce new revelations
and uncover previously overlooked areas of the Nazi genocide.
She and co-author ROBERT JAN VAN PELT have co-authored another
book,
Holocaust:
A History, and both join us tonight for the full two hours.

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA (Pt. 1)
Tonight, we continue our musical journey with a visit from
the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Although Ed Gardener once described
opera as "when a guy gets stabbed in the back and instead of bleeding
he sings," we'll delve a little deeper into one of the world's
great cultural venues. Two of the world's operatic giants, BRYN
TERFAL and JANE EAGLEN, will join us along with LOC Director BILL
MASON and LOC opera historian ROGER PINES, with many musical selections
as we go. Inside the opera at 9:00pm.

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA (Pt. 2)
If last night didn't sate your operatic appetite, this evening's
program should do the trick. SHERRILL MILNES is perhaps the most-renowned
baritone in opera and still active. A Chicago native, now affiliated
with Northwestern University, Milnes will join us for a second
consecutive night of opera, as we'll focus on the opera of yesterday
and how it stacked up against today's standards.
