AN AMERICAN DREAM

Richard Gephardt Democratic Leader of the House and a former Presidential Candidate is worried about America. In his new book An Even Better Place: America in the 21st Century he argues that partisan politics have brought America to the very brink of social catastrophe. Tonight Gephardt will explain how, as he sees it, America can avoid disaster in the 21st century and step boldly forward into the new millennium. The discussion starts directly after the ball game.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 2ND
SHAPING THE MODERN MIND

"I believe in the gymnasium for the body and music for the mind." Although the curriculum may have become a little more cluttered since Plato's time, education remains a subject of intense controversy. Tonight Extension 720 welcomes two leading educationalists to discuss how we should enlighten the coming generations: Howard Gardener, the Harvard Professor who developed the theory of multiple intelligences is the author of the new book The Disciplined Mind, What all Students Should Understand. Gardener is joined by Herbert Walberg Research Professor of Education and Psychology at The University of Illinois at Chicago. As well as being an internationally renowned educationalist Professor Walberg is currently Chairman of the board of The Heartland Institute.

GOLD FROM THE VAULT

Over the past month we've been recording some important interviews which will be given their first airing on tonight's show. Amongst those we may play are interviews with Salman Rushdie discussing his modern retelling of the myth of Orpheus, Julian Barnes presenting a distopian vision of England, Gitta Sereny talking about the child murderer Mary Bell and Jean Strouse dispelling the myths surrounding the life of the financier JP Morgan.

FRIDAY JUNE 4TH
IT'S STILL A MANS WORLD
(OR IS IT?)

Milt is on leave for tonight and Extension 720 is pleased to welcome Kathy O'Malley co-host of the Kathy and Judy Show in his stead. Kathy will be heading a program with an unapologetically female slant as we are joined by noted feminist and author of The Female Eunuch Germaine Greer, for a discussion of her new book The Whole Woman. She argues, in typically no holds barred style, that women remain the victims of male oppression. Offering a countervailing critique will be Phyllis Schlafly of the conservative, pro-family Eagle Forum. Sure to be a lively show, tonight on Extension 720.

THE HOLOCAUST IN AMERICAN LIFE

What are the costs for Jews and all Americans of making the Holocaust so central in American Life? Have American Jews, by making it the emblematic Jewish experience, given Hitler a posthumous victory? Does the Holocaust really teach useful lessons and sensitize us to atrocities? What is the significance of Americans spending hundreds of millions of dollars for museums recording a European crime when there is no museum of American slavery? These challenging questions are raised and discussed by Peter Novick in his new book, The Holocaust in American Life. Novick is joined by Peter Fritzsche Professor of History at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and author of Germans into Nazi's. "The Road to Kosovo reminds us of what we all too easily forget - that there are real people behind the headlines that we read from the Balkans" this comment from a recent review of The Road to Kosovo, by Greg Campbell provides the theme for this evening's show. Campbell joins a panel of experts including the Tribune's Richard Longworth, all recently returned from the region, convened to discuss the complex situation in Kosovo. A war viewed from the frontline tonight on Extension 720

William Boyd is a genuine tapeworm and that's no insult. Boyd, a celebrated documentary producer and author of Inside the Oval Office, has analyzed the Alexandrian wealth of recorded material generated by the Whitehouse. Successive presidents have gone to extraordinary lengths to record and tape their conversations and out-loud cogitations. Become a "bug on the wall" during some of the most important events of the 20th Century as we play excerpts of the tapes and talk to Boyd in front of our own concealed microphones, tonight on Extension 720.

As we emerge from the labyrinthine mess of the last impeachment scandal we look back on the careers of recent presidents in the company of Bob Woodward, one half of the journalistic team that uncovered Watergate. Woodward's new book Shadow: Five Presidents and the Legacy of Watergate considers the lasting effect of the Watergate scandal upon Nixon's successors. Tune in to Extension 720 to see what lessons the past can teach about present difficulties.

STATE OF RELIGIOUS BELIEF

A.N. Wilson will join an expert panel to discuss the current state of religious belief. Wilson's new book God's Funeral argues that the secularisation of society began prior to the publication of The Origin of Species and can be traced to writers such as Hume, Mill, Hegel Marx and Carlyle.

More tapes drawn from archive following tonight's ball game including London School of Economic Professor John Grey talking about the fragility of the Global economy and author Witold Rybczynski discussing his biography Clearing in the Distance: Frederick Law Olmsted and America in the Nineteenth Century.

THE ESSAY

",they come home to men's business and bosoms", so wrote Francis Bacon of his own essays; but the same could be said of all the great masters of this genre.. Tonight we consider the essay as a literary form in the company of Joseph Epstien, arguably America's finest living exponent of the essay, whose latest collection Narcissus Leaves the Pool has been recently published. Epstein is joined by an expert panel including Professor Robert Root who has recently produced a biography of the great American essayist E.B. White.
