Todd Mayfield, son of the legendary Curtis Mayfield, joins Justin to discuss his new book, “Traveling Soul: The Life of Curtis Mayfield.” Todd talks about why he wrote the book, what he had to do to write the biography, the emotional toll it took to write about his father, how there were a lot of stories in the book that he didn’t know about, the amount of work his father did to become successful, the primary influences in Curtis’ life including the church and gospel music, being one of the first families to move into Cabrini-Green, the Chicago Doo-wop explosion, how The Impressions formed, what happened when Curtis’ music became larger than life and part of the civil rights movement, Curtis’ transition from being in a band to starting a solo career, the accident that left Curtis paralyzed and the waning days of his life, reconnecting with Curtis and the upcoming book launch at The Promontory in Hyde Park.
