Dave Hoekstra (L) and Mat Smart

Dave Hoekstra sits down with fellow Naperville native and playwright Mat Smart, whose latest play “Naperville”, tells the story of a man who returns home to the titular western suburb to visit his blind mother, and explores the hidden beauty not often recognized in the suburbs.  Smart talks about the suburban themes found in the play, cutting his teeth as a journalist at Waubonsie Valley High School, his perception of Naperville after traveling and writing abroad, learning early on how to tackle “big” questions through his father’s work at Fermilab, his love of baseball and ballparks, and more.

“Naperville” runs through October 16th at Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont.
