It didn’t take long for the wheels to come off in Team USA’s must-win matchup vs. Team Canada.

USA’s start in the World Cup of Hockey Group A bout looked promising as they dictated the pace, had quality zone time and scored the first goal. New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonough opened up the scoring for Team USA. Fellow Ranger Derek Stepan was credited with an assist as was Patrick Kane.

Moments later, Team Canada scored three unanswered goals, two from Matt Duchene and one from Corey Perry. After the start they needed, the American’s found themselves out of position, and virtually out of the game.

With a world of pressure on Patrick Kane, not to mention three white Canadian jerseys swarming him whenever he touched the puck, Team USA needed more from the rest of the lineup. They never got it.

Patrice Bergeron scored in the second period to put the Americans down 4-1. Down three goals, there was very little fight from Team USA. There were out-played and out-skated for the remainder of the game.

T.J. Oshie scored late in the third period to cut the Canadian’s lead to 4-2, but that would be all she wrote. With an 0-2 preliminary record, Team USA was eliminated from the tournament.

The Americans won the World Cup of Hockey in 1996. Canada won in 2004.
