When you pump gas the taxes you pay by the gallon are supposed to be used to fix roads or help pay for new ones. Illinois lawmakers diverted money from the road fund into the general fund to patch budget holes they couldn’t figure out how to fill.

Marc Poulos, executive director of the Illinois, Indiana, Iowa foundation for fair contracting, and one of the leaders of the “Safe Roads” amendment that will allow transportation funds to be put into a lockbox and prohibiting them from being used for non transportation purposes. He joined Rick Pearson on the Sunday Spin to discuss the amendment and the various ways the funds should be used.
