On August 12th, Rabbis and religious allies will join striking workers outside of Golan’s Moving & Storage to demand that the company begin to negotiate in good faith.

Arise Chicago, an interfaith non-profit since 1991 that supports workers in struggle, first learned about workplace abuse at Golan and began educating workers about their rights.  Said one worker,  “I worked for six hours and was paid for only two.” After attending a workers rights training workshop from Arise Chicago, a worker leadership committee began to educate and organize their co-workers. Another worker noted, “This company has made a ton of money. They’ve gotten rich of us.” In a National Relations Labor Board election on December 12, 2013, by a vote of 60-11, the workers voted to join International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 705.

Since the election, the company has consistently refused to negotiate with the union. They have canceled over six bargaining sessions and have not given an honest proposal. Due to the Unfair Labor Practices, the workers voted to go out on strike on July 28th

On Tuesday morning rabbis and other religious leaders will hold a vigil outside of the Israeli-owned company to support the striking workers and to call on Golan’s to negotiate in good faith at the bargaining table.
