Former White House Press Secretary James Brady has died at age 73. Brady was seriously wounded in the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. Although he never fully recovered, he became an advocate for gun control. The federal law requiring background checks before purchases of firearms is often referred to as the Brady Law.  In 2000, the briefing room in the White House was officially named the “James S. Brady Press Briefing Room.”
