Reports of smoke at Elgin FAA Center grounds flights at O’Hare, Midway

UPDATE: Elgin fire officials have determined the source of the smoke to be a faulty motor in the building’s HVAC system. Personnel are being allowed to return to work. As of 3 p.m., a ground stop remains in effect, although limited arrivals and departures have begun at both O’Hare and Midway.

An evacuation following reports of smoke at the Elgin FAA Radar Facility has forced ground stops at O’Hare and Midway. Stay with 720 WGN for updates.
