Twenty-one years ago, a little boy unexpectedly darted from his mother’s care into traffic and was struck and killed by an auto. The parents, Greg and Pat Samata of Barrington, Ill., established a foundation in their child’s memory and have helped thousands of at-risk children as a result. The Samatas have decided to close the foundation and gift the proceeds — $500,000 — to inner-city, after-school By The Hand Club For Kids that operates centers in Cabrini-Green, Austin, Englewood and Altgeld-Gardens, to continue helping children who live in dangerous neighborhoods.
