Author James McBride burst onto the scene with his 1995 memoir The Color of Water. His latest novel is The Good Lord Bird, a humorous look at abolitionist John Brown. The Good Lord Bird was just nominated for a National Book Award. In this installment of Steve Bertrand on Books, he talks with Steve about Brown and Frederick Douglass, writing in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, and his next book: a look at James Brown.
