WGN Radio took top honors at the 2013 Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) Silver Dome Awards, held June 19 in Peoria. For the sixth year in a row, the IBA recognized WGN Radio as the Chicago Market Station of the Year at its annual best-in-state awards ceremony.

In addition to being named Chicago Market Station of the Year, WGN Radio also earned first place honors in five categories:  major market personality for Mike McConnell, best newscast for Judy Pielach, best station website for wgnradio.com, best play-by-play team for Chicago Cubs broadcasters Pat Hughes and Keith Moreland, and best humorous commercial for “Chicago Food and Wine”, produced by Jason Skaggs.

“It is a great honor to receive the award for Chicago Market Station of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association,” said Jimmy de Castro, President/General Manager of WGN Radio. “To be recognized by our industry peers is a reflection of the tremendous talent and dedication from our staff to continue to provide the quality of programming our community expects from WGN Radio.”

Radio station competition is divided into three market classifications, allowing stations in similarly sized markets to compete on a level playing field. Out-of-state broadcasters do the judging for the Illinois competition. Entry fees collected for the competition help fund the IBA’s College Endowment and Minority Internship Programs.
