A 41-year-old missing person case has been closed after Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart’s ongoing investigation into the infamous John Wayne Gacy murders helped lead to new details.

Relatives say Steven Soden went missing from New Jersey in 1972 when he was 16. They contacted Illinois police in 2011, according to a press release from Dart’s office, after they thought the boy ran away to be with his biological father, who lived in Chicago at the time.

Using DNA evidence provided by Soden’s sister last December, investigators tied her sample to Soden’s remains that were found 13 years ago.
