Working overnight, construction crews used backhoes to tear up large sections of the runway at Meigs Field Monday, March 31, 2003, in Chicago. This effectively shutdown the lakefront airport since no traffic can take off or land. The backhoes cut large X’s in several spots on the main runway. (David Klobucar/Chicago Tribune)
