The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago is expected to lay off about 10 percent of its work force Wednesday, the Tribune has learned.

The downsizing, which apparently has been in the works for months, coincides with the arrival of Cardinal Francis George in Rome this week to participate in the conclave to choose a new pope.

One employee who entered the Archdiocese of Chicago building at 835 N. Rush St. this morning said he received a memo that instructed workers to be in the office Wednesday.
