Mary Van De Velde is now in her 19th year of reporting traffic on WGN Radio. She’s currently working with Steve Cochran, but has also talked traffic and other topics with legends such as Wally Phillips, Bob Collins, Spike O’Dell, Jonathan Brandmeier, and Kathy and Judy.
Mary started her broadcast career at her alma mater, the University of Illinois, working in news at WPGU and the PBS station, WILL. Then she traveled to the northwoods of Wisconsin and worked as a News Director at a small station. Her news career continued in Madison, WI., and the Quad Cities, before she made her way back to the big market of Chicago. She has worked at a number of stations in the Chicagoland area, including the Illinois News Network, Satellite Music Network, WTMX, WSCR, and WMAQ.. When not reporting traffic, Mary enjoys doing voiceover work for industrial and commercial use.
Mary lives in the western suburbs with her husband Steve and three kids, Kelsey, Chris, and Will. Almost an empty nester, she looking forward to traveling and trying new hobbies to keep busy, especially arts and crafts. She’s a big fitness buff, always running, biking, or dancing. Zumba is her latest craze, but a marathon is still on the bucket list!
