It seems to me that we could use retired police officers that already had an income and pay them a whole lot less as an extra part time job……………Diane

Good idea.
It seems that many of the folks protesting this thought had no problems with it when President Clinton made the same proposal for the second round of COPS grants back in April of 2000.
I guess it's only stupid if it comes from the NRA or someone without a (D) after their name to them.

All the guns and all the sharpshooters couldn't save Ragan. Only a bad shot saved him.

And neither did the laws in place at the time, and the "Brady Law" they passed after that incident would not have stopped the shooter from obtaining the firearm he used either.
After the Reagan attempt, a retired Secret Service agent made the observation "If an assassin is willing to die to achieve his goal, then all the laws and guards in the world won't stop him".
Laws don't stop criminals who don't care about going to jail (just look at Chicago's wonderful gun "ban" and how it's reduced gun violence here) and they don't stop crazies who figure on offing themselves rather than get arrested (like the majority of spree shooters).

Why don't the schools set up a secondary way out of the classrooms, like a swing open window exit. Especially on first floor levels. It seems that now they are trapped with only 1 way out. Let's think outside the box, and not just about arming teachers.

Good idea from a fire standpoint as well.
December 30, 2012 at 8:50 AM
Actually, the second, outside exit is a building code requirement for all daycare rooms at licensed daycare centers here in Illinois….stands to reason it would be a good addition to our school building codes as well. We haven't had a death by fire in a school in this country in over 50 years – because we took steps to prevent that problem – the current problem of school shootings should be dealt with the same way – limiting access to the school, shooter drills, armed guard, bullet-resistent doors/windows in classrooms, secondary exits…there are lots of things that can be done that are either not being done now, or are in place but not being followed.

Why dont we give the men and women comming back from the service the first chance at being school guards there already trained in combat! Oh and John whats the status of Jesse Jacksons Jrs FIOD card and his guns? He has a mental disorder so say the Doctors. In ILL that calls for him to turn over his firearms and gun card its the LAW !!! after all he is nobetter then anyone else or is he? or do the ILL democrats cover for him and say he can keep his?

You mean like the Mayors and Aldermen carrying as "Conservators of the Peace"?
Or maybe you mean the state legislators carrying as retired (or on admin leave) cops?
Oh, no, you must have been referring to the politicians carrying guns with bogus Private Investigator or Security Guard credentials?
While they say that only cops, criminals and politicians carry concealed firearms in IL, it sure is hard to tell the difference sometimes. Good thing they work so hard to keep the little people from having the same right – excuse me – privilege.

How about we make sure nobody's got assault rifles (hunters don't use 'em) and we require background checks on all gun and ammo buyers? If we protect kids is putting armed guards in schools, the thugs will kill them in the malls and movie theaters.
December 27, 2012 at 9:42 PM
Hunters do use models that would fall under the cosmetically named category of "assault rifle". In IL we have background check in the FOID, which is required for purchase of guns and ammo whether from stores or person to person.
As for "thugs killing them in the malls and movie theaters" maybe it's becaus of the useless designation they currently share with schools – the tragically misnamed "gun free zone" – which only keeps law abiding people from carrying guns there.
By the way, I guess you didn't know that Portland TV station KGW reported that the gunman saw a lawful concealed firearm holder approaching him after he had fixed his (stolen) rifle – that's when he killed himself. I guess those "good guys with guns" aren't just an NRA myth after all.

How do you "make sure"? Have you ever heard the phrase "when you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have them". It's true. The areas with the strictest gun laws have the most gun crime, that is a fact. Drive through the south or west side of Chicago if you don't believe me.

Fantastic idea in regard to making guns accessible to teachers (or any workplace personnel) ONLY in a time of need…

If having armed guards doesn't do any good, why do we have them in banks, courthouses, goverment buildings, airports, etc.? If armed guards can't protect kids, maybe Mayor Rahm should remove the police detail that watches his family. Maybe the president should get rid of his secret service staff.
December 28, 2012 at 6:55 AM
Well BillB, we all seem to agree then…good people with guns IS the answer to safety in life.
