New WGN Radio hosts Carol Roth and Turi Ryder

CHICAGO (December 17, 2012) WGN Radio today announced changes to its weekday lineup effective January 2013.

Beginning Wednesday, January 2, 2013, Jonathon Brandmeier’s morning show will be extended one half hour, shifting to a 6 a.m. start time and airing until 10 a.m.  Mike McConnell will air from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by the return of The Noon Show with host Carol Roth from 12-1 p.m.  Mike McConnell will return to the airwaves from 1-3 p.m. and Garry Meier and WGN Sports Night will continue to air during their respective 3-7 p.m and 7-10 p.m. time slots.  On Monday, January 7, Turi Ryder takes over the 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. time slot.

The Noon Show host Carol Roth is a bestselling author and national media personality who can be seen weekly on a variety of television outlets, including Fox Business, CNBC, Fox News, CNN and MSNBC. Her show will provide news and information, lifestyle segments, and will include business and agricultural reports from legendary WGN Radio broadcaster, Orion Samuelson.

Host Turi Ryder returns to the Chicago airwaves after previous stints at WLS AM, KFI Los Angeles, KIRO Seattle, and KSTP Minneapolis. Most recently she presented the nationally syndicated editorial humor feature, “Turi Ryder’s Exception to the Rule” for CBS Radio.

Extension 720 with Milt Rosenberg ends its 39-year run on December 20 with a final retrospective show featuring notable moments, guests and previous discussions that have aired on this illustrious program.

“Milt has added another rich chapter to WGN Radio’s history and we thank him for his service,” said Jeff Hill, GSM/Interim General Manager of WGN Radio. “Though Milt will not be a full-time program host, he will continue to be a show contributor and have a presence at the station.  We’re also very excited to add two female voices to our lineup and to Chicago radio in Carol Roth and Turi Ryder.”

Rosenberg added, “I’m thankful to my listeners and I’m proud to have shared almost 40 years with them.  We attempted to provide intelligent radio featuring the movers and observers of history being made as well as programs on established history, the popular and ‘high’ arts, and the sciences from cosmology to sociology – all mixed with frequent forays into more light-hearted fare.”

New schedule effective January 2013:

6-10a.m.: Jonathon Brandmeier
10a.m.-12p.m.: Mike McConnell
12-1p.m.: The Noon Show – Carol Roth
1-3p.m.: Mike McConnell
3-7p.m.: Garry Meier

I couldn't agree more, Mike McConnell is the biggest waste of airtime I've ever seen, now you doubled his space? Your program changes are creating your own demise, I say keep the old lineup and Make changes to the Programing Department, you just blew another hole in the bottom of an already sinking ship!

Funny how the 71 comments pointing out the idiocy of the changes being made are now erased. Seems like Orwell's 1984 where history is being re-written. I guess we used to be fans are believed to be such morons we have forgotten how great WGN and Milt were just a few weeks ago. Read the praise WGN heaped upon Milt and his show, how proud they were to carry him and his show. Now try to find his name here. WGN, you just don't get it at all. Such a shame. Shame on you that made these sorry decisions. I even wonder if I will listen to the Cubs. I really doubt it. That is how offensive and insulting these changes really are. Go sit in the corner with the dunce hat on. It will fit your pin heads rather well. WGN was great, no longer, goodby.

Interesting Line-up. I am not familiar with either of the ladies that are joining WGN, but I am very excited that there will be female voices coming out over the 50,000 watt airwaves again. Like so many others, I have been a faithful WGN listener for about 20 years. There have been so many changes in the past few years. I try to give everyone a chance to entertain me. So good luck and have fun ladies.
John Williams, your are going to be very missed. I know your listeners in MN love you as much as we do and will take good care of you. If you ever change your mind and want to come home……

I will miss Milt Rosenberg. His show was one of two that I listened to on WGN…the other being John Williams. Now I guess it's time to find another station. Milt Rosenberg's show was an intelligent centerpiece which made you think and care in an otherwise world filled with silly banter, celeb craziness and other meaningless nonsense.

I don't care for Turi Ryder and haven't heard Carol Roth but I don't believe they will be worthy of my time. The hosts hired the past few years are an indication as how far "downhill" the once great WGN has gone. They say radio is "dying'….no wonder when there are such few choices.

I do enjoy Nick D. and Bill Leff but can't stay awake every night to listen to them.

The trashing of Milt's show was among the most lame-brain things your station has ever done; why you could not have worked in a program comparable to Milt, is beyond comprehension.. WGN continues on it its rapid spiral to the bottom of the heap…

Now all that is left is nothing unless one wants to listen to the screaming rapid nonsense of an attempt to call a hockey game or the slow moaning of a cubs game with every excuse in the universe attempting feebly to make junk broadcasting "interesting"… You seem to have forgotten that with the WEB we can listen to any station in the world… Adios, former friend…

Congrats to Milt after such a long run, however the overall changes to the station are puzzling at best…. Wally Phillips and Bob Collins would not recognize their old home, such a shame…. I am in my mid 40's and grew up listening to them because of my mother and continued through the years. I have a feeling I may be signing off now too…

I am really, really sad, sad, sad about John Williams leaving. He is the best of WGN. Mr. Brandmeir's jarring screaming forced me to quit WGN in the AM and as he is followed by caustic, know-it-all Mike McConnell, the station's only salvation was in John who is intelligent, humorous and always a gentleman. I wiish John only the best as I bid a sad farewell to my over 40 years of tuning in to WGN.I am sorry to see Dr. Rosenberg go also in spite of the fact that I think he has a proclivity to "out talk" the very guests who were there to talk on a subject of their expertise.
    A parting company, WGN listener.

Joan said it very well- Brandmier is a jarring and screaming voice – I don't understand how he gets so much time off, however I am happy when he is gone so that I can hear Bill Leff replace him. However when Brandmeier is on when my clock radio goes on in the AM, I IMMEDIATELY switch to another station. I only hope he had a short contract and will look forward to his departure.

And another thing…..extending Johnathan Brandmeier's show? Are you kidding!! I would love to see some true customer surveys on how WGN is doing now under this mgmt. Can't believe this is what the people are asking for. Saying goodbye from a long time listener. What the heck are you all thinking?

I agree with Joan and Julie….I can't even listen to the morning hosts so I wait for John Williams. I am not famliar with the two new woman hosts so I will certainly listen and hopefully they will be a positive change. Who wants to listen to Johnathan Brandmeier for longer than he is already on? Is that the bst you could do and Mike McConnell split up 2x is too much to take. Oh well, WLS has some great hosts on in the afternoon – Joan/Julie you may want to give them a shot!

I'm afraid I have to agree with the previous comments. WGN has gone down hill ever since the demise of Spike, Steve & Johnnie, John Williams and now Milt. Johnny B is obnoxious. I don't listen during the day since I am at work. Milt's program was intelligent and worthwhile. Bill Leff does a good job but can't hold a candle to Steve & Johnnie. I seem to turn on the radio less and less. Perhaps it is time to find another station. If you needed to save money, perhaps the program manager could be scrubbed. He doesn't seem to get it right any more. If Big O ever leaves, WGN will be done forever.

Who will have a civil discussion with Jews and Palestinians, who will be able to speak of astro-physics and then baseball, or play some jazz? I am not acquainted with either female hosts so I can’t pass judgement . Milt departing is a “major” loss to WGN and it’s identity.

To fill in John Williams with 1 hour of one host and TWO MORE hours of Mike McConnel is a bad bad bad mistake which will cost WGN ratings. This is really poor scheduling. What WGN should do is bring back Steve & Johnny to do the 12 – 3 shift, or put Bill in that slot and put Steve & Johnny back on overnights. Bumping Bill to 1? Really? Bad move.

Have to give the new hosts a chance, but I know I won’t waste 4 hours of my day with Mike. If I want that I can just listen WLS.

Have a feeling by June whoever has made these decisions will be fired and WGN will announce yet another new line up.

WGN – with the final departure of John Williams and Milt, you will be unrecognizable as the great station you once were for so many decades. I don't know what kind of audience you are seeking with your choices. I hope they prove to be as loyal to you as all of us that listened for decades in the past. What you've done to this great station is a tragedy.

I agree whole heartedly. At one time, I felt that all of the personalities at WGN were like a family. I cannot understand what management is trying to accomplish. Seems like the "new crowd" callng the shots at WGN forgot about what Macy's did when they bought Marshall Fields. How is that working out for you? Looks like these screwballs, like Macys, forgot there are other places in town to visit. It now makes sense that John W elected to move. Good luck to Milt & John. Just deleted this web site from my favorites. I wrote the WGN director of advertising asking him who will you sell time to, now that your audience will be kids with no money, no education and no jobs. He wished me a happy holiday and said he hoped I would return. He did not disagree with my assessment of the new audience. Consider Books on Tape and The Great Courses to replace this once great radio station. A little piece of our Chicago will die after Milt's last broadcast Thursday night.
Good night and good luck. See you down the dial.

It was with shock that I learnt Milton Rosenberg time is ending! I have been listening only since 1987. He has the pearl shape tones with a vocabulary to match–and an intellect to use that vocabulary. William Buckley's vocabulary compared favorably to Milt's. Even the podcasts are gone before he goes? What chance is there of the podcasts being part of Milt's entry on wgngold.com? Or of Milton having a webpage with the podcasts? Steve and Johnnie are gone and now Milt. Nick D is now the only reason to listen at night to WGN. I am a listener from Lexington, Kentucky.

Sounds weird but as much as I disagreed with them (and John W for that matter) they ALWAYS presented their views in an intelligent and sane manner but with light and humor. I am profoundly sad that tonight will be Milt's last show. He is the reason we, to date, have listened to WGN almost exclusively at our house. He brought such a wonderful balance to the station's other broadcasters. Even with all the changes at the station over the past few years he was a constant and comforting presence. I touted his intellect and said as long as WGN keeps Milt they will keep me. Unfortunately that will only last until 12:01 tonight, when 720 will be silenced in our house, car, and office, never to be switched on again.

I, like many here, grew up listening to WGN – from Wally to Bob, Eddie Schwartz to Steve & Johnnie, Spike O'Dell and Steve Cochran, Milt Rosenberg and Rick Kogan, and of course – "the girls." In the last 3 years, this station has deteriorated into rubbish. The loss of Kogan, Rosenberg, and Williams in the last several weeks is the last nail in the coffin for me. Quality has left the station. If I wanted to listen to Johnny B and his nonsense, I'd pull out the way-back machine and go back to my high school and college days (but I left those behind for good reason). Thank God I have Northwestern football tickets so I do not have to worry about tuning into this station again. I am in the prime demographic for a radio station like WGN, but the time has come to put this AM horse out to pasture. I am listening to Milt's sign off broadcast now and then I'll follow with my own. RIP WGN…

Seriously, WGN? Why on earth wouldn't you put Nick D or Brian Noonan or Bill Leff in the JW slot during the day? What about bringing back ChicagoNow/hosts? Any of them would be better (by miles) than more McConnell or that stupid noon show idea. Turi whatshername is not WGN material…how many "ums" can a listener take? The only person worth tuning in for during the day now is Garry Meier. Brian Noonan in the sports show is fine (snore), but would prefer to hear him shine again and do a daytime version of his former overnight weekend show!! Bring back the arcade!!!!

Good luck to Milt Rosenberg and John Williams. Their distinctive brands of radio awesomeness will be sorely missed. I might have to switch the virtual dial on my iPhone and tune into JW do his thing from MN now…

Mike McConnell needs to go away, and Brandmier should be right behind him. The station is sliding fast and that won't stop until they make the changes necessary to bring wgn back to the personable, sensible, and fun station that it used to be. Brandmier is NOT fun! Johnny B is obnoxious and I can't find anyone else worth spending my time with. No more WGN for us, either on the air waves or internet. Milt's program was intelligent, educational and worthwhile. Where did the podcasts go? Don and Carol Herr, in Iowa

    Milt is at miltonrosenberg45@hotmail.com.
He said he will advise you of his pod cast when avaliable, and his activities.
The noise you hear is my flushing WGN down the toilet.

Used to be an Mon-Fri 8am-5pm listener (I stream at work). I continued to listen, even with all the changes you were making. But I just couldn't take Johnny B, who is a has-been, 80's shock-jock that needs to grow up and I never warmed up to Mike McConnell. So for the last year I was listening less but you still had me in the afternoon with John and Gerry. With John gone, you have reduced this former 9 hour per day listener to a 2 hour per day listener. Such a shame…. I really used to like your station.

First, let me say that I hope both John Williams and Milt Rosenberg are ending their shows of their own volition, although I somehow doubt it. Mike McConnell isnt a bad guy, he just has a harsh voice, difficult to listen to and Johnnie B is good but interruptions every 7 minutes are too much to take when commutin by car. I do not understand WHY the station doesn't give Nick more time rather than being in "rent-a-hosts". I know the station is woefully female light, but why not Jen Wiegel or someone else known to Chicago? I loved John Williams show and thought that Milt's show was the most interestingly intellignet thing on the airwaves —-no more. Apparently, caustic voices and forced humor are the key words for the day. The ONLY good change has been Bill Leff — what a breath of fresh air after years too many of Steve and Jonnie's vapid shows.

The loss (dumping) of Milt Rosenberg is regretful, and "titanic" , so far as WGN"s long standing, loyal, listeners are concerned. And the removal of his podcasts, is like rubbing more sand in his many devoted listeners eyes !
Management of WGN has struck another blow to what used to be "The Voice of Chicago". Unfortunately, "the die is cast " regarding the future of what once was the greatest station on the airways !

John Williams and his positive attitude will be greatly missed, just like Spike and Kathy & Judy. He was a breath of fresh air on an increasingly stuffy radio station. I'm just glad he's leaving on his own terms.

I can't stand Brandmeier's juvenile antics (sorry, but prank calls aren't funny if you're over 12 years old), and McConnell's know-it-all attitude grates on my nerves. I like Nick D, and Bill Leff is growing on me. Actually, I prefer it when they (or ANYONE!) fill in for Brandmeier or McConnell.

Now the producers and the news, traffic, sports, weather personalities are the only interesting voices during daytime hours.

So WGN….get the hints? I just scrolled thru all these and not a positive comment amongst the bunch! Tell you something?? Like the one above said…you could have at least waited for Milt to leave the building before scrubbing him from the site. Do a search up top for 'Milt Rosenberg' and you only get 2 (!!!!) results: the new programming lineup and the 'Wally Phillips CD'. Really???? 39 years and he gets redirected to Wally?? Lame. Go play more commercials and lose even more listeners.

I'm a long-time listener to WGN, back to the days of Wally Phillips, Uncle Bobby, Spike, Kathy and Judy. Now, no more Rick Cogan, Milt, or John Williams. I do not like Johnnie B., every other phrase out of his mouth is, "Oh my God".The prank calls aren't funny at all. All he does is scream. I don't listen in the morning at all any more. Now with Milt gone, I won't be listening at night either. The only one I enjoy is Lou M. on Saturdays. That's it. WGN has really gone downhill. I agree with the above comments, I don't like the new wgnradio.com, and not even having Milt's podcasts to listen to, what a shame. I'm changing radio stations. Really a shame, after all of these years. Good bye.

I listen nightly in the San Francisco Bay Area to Milt. The changes probably signal the end of WGN or perhaps the person(s) that made the changes.(They are probably republicans.) The only alternative here is PBS.
